Authentic Japanese cuisine London

The restaurant "Kanada-Ya 金田家" in London is a renowned destination for lovers of authentic Japanese cuisine, particularly famous for its specialty, Tonkotsu ramen. It was originally founded in 2009 by Kanada Kazuhiro in Yukuhashi, a small town in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and has since made a name for itself internationally. The first branch in London opened its doors in 2015, bringing the concept of traditional ramen to the British capital. There are now several locations in the city, each appreciated for its quality and authenticity.

Tonkotsu ramen with Chashu pork

The focus at Kanada-Ya is clearly on Tonkotsu ramen, a dish characterized by its intense flavor and meticulous preparation. The broth is simmered from pork bones for over 18 hours until it achieves a creamy, rich consistency typical of this ramen variant. Accompanying this are handmade alkaline noodles that provide the perfect texture, as well as tender Chashu pork that rounds off the bowl. Notably, guests have the option to customize the firmness of the noodles—a detail that emphasizes the authenticity and dedication to craftsmanship.

Truffle ramen modern Japanese dishes

In addition to the classic Tonkotsu ramen, the restaurant has expanded its offerings over time. A highlight is the truffle ramen, which adds a modern twist to traditional cuisine with its aromatic addition and is very popular among guests. The Chicken Paitan ramen, a variant made with chicken broth, offers a lighter yet equally flavorful alternative. Accompanying the main dishes are classic sides such as Onigiri—Japanese rice balls wrapped in nori—and Karaage, crispy fried chicken that serves as a perfect complement.

Takeaway options Japanese restaurant

The ambiance in the Kanada-Ya branches is simple and functional, with a touch of Japanese minimalism that draws attention to the food. The open kitchen allows guests to watch the chefs at work, enhancing the experience and creating a sense of closeness to the preparation. The atmosphere is lively but not overcrowded, making the restaurant suitable for both a quick visit and a relaxed meal. The service is often described as friendly and attentive, contributing to the positive overall impression.

High quality ingredients ramen

Kanada-Ya places great importance on high-quality ingredients and traditional preparation methods, which is reflected in every bite. It is not only a place for ramen enthusiasts but also for those seeking to experience Japanese culinary arts in their authentic form. The restaurant's popularity is evident from the regular long queues—a sign that the wait is worth it for many guests. In addition to the dine-in experience, Kanada-Ya also offers takeaway options, allowing the dishes to be enjoyed on the go or at home without compromising quality.

The ramen was delicious—the broth was super flavorful, and the noodles had just the right amount of firmness. Service was great, really friendly and attentive. The only downside was that the table for two felt a bit too cozy (pretty small), so keep that in mind. Also, the service charge isn’t included, so you’ll need to add a tip (and they definitely deserve it!). Personally, I’m not a fan of this, love the “add the tip for America, London doesn’t need it. But overall, the food and service made it well worth it!

Had to share my negative experience with the service here. My partner and I arrived at a moderately busy time and asked if there were any tables available as we were walk-ins, we were told to wait 10 minutes for a table which was fine by us. We return 10 minutes later to be turned away with a flat no. As walk-ins we 100% would've understood that there were no available tables and could have gone elsewhere no problem, they simply needed to tell us up front. Asking us to wait just to refuse us was simply unacceptable. Cannot give more stars for wasting our time. Cannot comment on the food.
